Bespoke kitchen: What to consider before you begin A kitchen needs to hold a lot. Cooking and meals. Storage and worktops. Busy weekdays and long evenings around the table. When the kitchen is designed with the room and the people who will use it as the starting point, each part can be given a clear function. The dimensions can be adapted to the architecture. The materials can be chosen with both use and expression in mind. The details can be developed as parts of a whole. Here are some of the choices it is useful to think through before the work begins. What is a bespoke kitchen? A bespoke kitchen is developed for a particular room and a particular customer. The solution is therefore not tied to fixed cabinet widths, standardised finishes or a ready-made plan. This gives freedom to make use of rooms with uneven walls, high ceilings, unusual angles or other architectural features. Just as important is the possibility of adapting the kitchen to the way it will actually be used. Bespoke joinery does not necessarily mean making the kitchen more complicated. Often it means finding a calmer and more precise solution. Start with everyday life Before form, colours and wood species, you should look at how the kitchen is meant to function. How many people use the room at the same time? Where does the cooking take place? Should the kitchen also be a social gathering point? What should be easily accessible, and what can be stored more out of sight? It can be useful to think through: the need for worktop space and storage the placement of the sink, hob and refrigerator where small appliances and kitchen equipment should be kept whether the kitchen should open up to or screen off other rooms how daylight and movement affect the floor plan which functions should be able to be hidden when not in use Good answers to these questions provide a better starting point than a particular style or a single inspiration image. Let the room help decide A good kitchen does not need to dominate the room. It can follow the architecture, carry materials through from other parts of the home and create a natural transition between kitchen, dining area and living space. In older houses, bespoke joinery can make it possible to preserve character and existing details. In new builds, the kitchen can be developed as an integrated part of the architecture from the very start. It is therefore an advantage to involve the kitchen maker early, particularly when the project also involves an architect, interior architect or other tradespeople. Choose materials for both use and expression The materials affect how the kitchen is experienced, but also how it ages and what kind of maintenance it requires. Wood is a living material. Grain, colour variation and figure are part of the expression, and the surface will develop through use. Stone, metal and other materials can add contrast, weight or precision. The choice of materials should be considered together: How will the materials meet the floor, walls and other fittings? Which surfaces will be most exposed to water, heat and daily wear? Do you want the kitchen to change character over time? How much maintenance suits your everyday life? Should the materials be carried through into wardrobes, bathrooms or other fixed fittings? When materials and details are repeated across rooms, the home can gain a clearer and more cohesive expression. What affects the price? A bespoke kitchen rarely has one fixed price. The cost is shaped by the room, the materials and the degree of workmanship. Among the factors that usually affect the price are: the size and layout of the kitchen choice of materials and surface treatment the number of drawers, cabinets and custom-made details the fittings and organisation inside the cabinets worktop, sink, hardware and appliances the need for adaptation to walls, ceiling and existing building elements delivery, installation and coordination with other trades It is therefore more accurate to consider the kitchen as a whole than to compare price per cabinet or running metre. An early budget also provides an important framework for material choices and priorities. From the first conversation to the finished solution At Hamran, a project begins with a conversation about the room, your needs and your wishes. From there we work on the design, choice of materials and adaptation to the home. Sketches and material samples make it possible to assess both the whole and the details before the solution is finalised. Along the way, we look at, among other things, workflow, storage, surfaces and how the kitchen meets the rest of the interior. The aim is not only for the kitchen to fit in. It should feel natural to use and be good to live with over time. What you can prepare before the first meeting You do not need to have all the answers ready. It is nevertheless useful to gather: drawings or approximate measurements of the room pictures of the existing kitchen and adjoining rooms information about new building, renovation or planned changes a few reference images showing the desired mood an overview of functions and storage needs a desired timeframe and a preliminary budget A good first meeting is as much about uncovering needs as about choosing a finished solution. A kitchen developed for the room and the life in it A bespoke kitchen makes it possible to work holistically with function, materials and architecture. Every detail can have a purpose, and every choice can be seen in relation to the rest of the room. The result should not only be a new kitchen. It should be a lasting part of the home.
